StackPreneur: When it comes to startups in Africa and especially in Nigeria, we are not there yet.. What are the reasons why we are not disrupting new innovations?
Adeyanju Opeyemi: Nigeria as a country is a developing economy, we have missed out from first to third industrial revolution, but now we are beginning to pickup in this technology age which is refer to the forth industrial revolution.
In my opinion there are two factors that have contributed to our backwardness when it comes to technology and innovation
1. Lack of good leadership to provide infrastructural facilities
2. Our educational system is not building our capacity to tap into this opportunity.
These two major reasons have led to where we are today as a nation.
StackPreneur: Hooo! So education is still part of the problems against innovations. What is the simplest form of solution Nigeria can adopt to catchup with the high speed moving train of technology?
Adeyanju Opeyemi: Nigeria is blessed, one of our major strength in Nigeria is our human capital, we have the human resources required to turn things around. We have the resources to become the future China of Africa continent. But the truth is this human resources need to be developed. Government need to make adequate resources to build our human capacity to meet-up with this technology age. Our education system needs to be improved, policies that will ease business startups need to be passed to law. Basic infrastructure needs to be put in place. Government needs to make provision for center for innovation and research institute across the country and well equipped. Until our government begin to put this in place, we‘ll still remain far behind.
StackPreneur: Hmmmm! But despite these problems, you thrive and you are building your empire. How are you able to achieve these? And what drives you?
Adeyanju Opeyemi: That is a big question. As a human being, we have the ability to decide what we want out of Life. I made a decision when I was still very young not to be poor, so I went after knowledge and I discovered what I need to discover.
I made a decision when I was still very young not to be poor, so I went after knowledge and I discover what I need to discover.
First, I was able to discover myself early enough and I made my choice, I also discovered how to achieve my vision in life. I must start paying the price of self development, so I took time to develop myself, I paid the due price.
What I discovered early and the thought of making this world a better place before I leave keep driving me not to give up even in all challenges.
StackPreneur: This is a passion and self discovery drive.. We learnt about your StartupHub project and a new position you were recently appointed to. Can you briefly tell us about these and help tell our youths hard work pays.
Adeyanju Opeyemi: Thank you for this. In 2011, when I registered my first business, I knew nothing about business, so I made so many mistakes that were not obvious to me until 2014. Then I went back to work with a mentor who pays me by teaching me all I need to know about business for a whole year. In 2015 I set out into another journey of entrepreneurship with a new vision to build global indigenous entrepreneurs, to help young ones startup easily, to help individual and entrepreneurs start, run and grow their business to a level of sustainability, so we set out and strategically leverage on technology.
We first launched Mabo Mall an e-commerce website to promote and sell strictly indigenous products which later was a failed project. In our quest to fulfill our vision we launched Startup Hub which is fast growing today. I have put so much effort to mentor startups and young entrepreneurs, in the course of doing this in 2016 I was elected as the Lagos State Executive Director For Africa’s Young Entrepreneurs, an organization dedicated to empowering Young Africans to become successful entrepreneur having their HQ in SA and over 19 branches across Africa.
Early this year, Bank of Africa setup an online mentorship program called Africa’s Entrepreneurship Award online mentorship which I was selected and last month I was recognized and awarded the most committed mentor in Nigeria. I will continue to say this when you give what you have, you will get what you don’t have. Our youths should discover their passion, dream and be dedicated to fulling their dream.
StackPreneur: Whaoo! This is an amazing time with you sir.. Just one word for our young entrepreneurs out there.
Adeyanju Opeyemi: I know it is challenging, I know it is tough, I know it is not easy, but don’t give up. It is a process, the process has a starting point and an ending, soon the challenges you are going through now will soon be over, this present process will end and a new one will begin but what you do or allowed to be done with in this present situation and process will determine your next process. Believe me if you go through this process without quiting the next process will be your earning process.
I know it is challenging, I know it is tough, I know it is not easy, but don’t give up.
You are permitted to shout, you are permitted to hurt yourself, you are permitted to cry yourself to bed but one thing you are not permitted to do is to quit, quitters never win and winners never quit, keep moving you will soon be there.
Believe me if you go through this process without quiting the next process will be your earning process
StackPreneur: We hope you have been motivated. Keep going forward, you will win your own accolades soonest.
