It is all over the internet the story of a 13 years old Adesiyan Oladipo, a programmer who developed a website for a school in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria.
The StackPreneur team had a chat with Adesiyan Oladipo and he shared his journey to tech and gave motivation to other kids who also want to start a journey in tech.
AT WHAT AGE DID YOU START CODING AND WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO START A JOURNEY IN TECH?
I started coding when I was 13 years old.
It all started one afternoon when I had vacated from school. Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t collect my result that term which really pained me. As you know, I was on holiday so I had time to think. I began to think of different ways students could view their results online so I did a lot of research and I settled for an e-portal. So, here am I!
WHAT FUNNY EVENT GOT YOU INTO CODING?
My immediate elder brother started creating blogs on his phone with python programming language so I fell in love with it; so I started coding.
HOW HAS YOUR PARENT BEEN A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION AND SUPPORT TOWARDS YOUR CODING CAREER?
Daddy has ever liked tech but mum counted it as a waste of time but when she saw the cool stuff I did with it, she became a fan. Well now, they have seen it all and they love the outcome of my coding so they really help me out in terms of money, advice, and anything I might need.
WHAT BEST WAY(S) DO YOU LEARN CODING AND OTHER TECH RELATED STUFF?
I simply try to focus each time I am coding. I devote all I have to code, I mean “all”; with that, I have found success.
I mainly watch YouTube videos to develop myself. As I watch, I do and practice all the time to master what I have learned. I wish to attend a coding hackathon soon.
IT IS ALL OVER THE NEWS THAT YOU DEVELOPED A WEBSITE FOR A SCHOOL IN AKURE, ONDO STATE IN NIGERIA. WHAT PROMPTED THIS GESTURE AND WHAT IS YOUR PLAN TO DO MORE?
I wanted it to be easier for students, parents, and visitors to access the school information. I did it for free but I have been compensated for it.
A Punch Newspaper personnel saw my work and interviewed me and that prompted the news all over the media.
I will create a lot of projects e.g clone of social media, a clone of an e-commerce website and a whole lot of websites. With that, I will be able to develop myself a lot. You can check out the latest project I released after the interview here
WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES LEARNING CODING AND IN THE TECH CAREER?
My greatest challenge was that I started coding with a phone. It was even my mum’s phone so I was restricted. Later, I got my PC fixed.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO PARENTS THAT ARE NOT ENCOURAGING THEIR WARDS TO LEARN CODING? WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO KIDS LIKE YOU THAT ARE CODING AND THOSE THAT WANT TO LEARN CODING TOO?
I think coding is a thing everyone should want to do. Parents should encourage their children to learn programming. Most kids have a smartphone and a PC. They shouldn’t just watch movies with it they should try and do cool things with it. For those who are already coding, just continue. It might seem tough but focus on the beautiful end result.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS IN THIS TECH WORLD?
Well, if I do not engage in part-time media creation because that’s what I also Iike then I will be a little CEO of a hit website I will be launching soon.
